There are so many things which affect you and your baby when you are pregnant! Food is one of the most important factors... There are certain foods which might cause allergic reactions, and so are better avoided during your pregnancy. Here are some of the foods you should be careful about -

- Fish: Fish is known to be one of the best sources of first class protein and omega 3 fatty acids, but some of the fishes will also contain harmfully high amounts of mercury! Take it as a thumb rule - bigger the size of the fish, higher the mercury content! Some of the varieties of fish which should be avoided during pregnancy (just to be on the safer side) are - shark, mackerel, swordfish, tilefish, tuna, etc. Also avoid recipes with raw or semi-cooked fish meat.

- Raw meat: Any raw meat can spread infections (mostly bacterial and viral) very fast and so should be avoided. Raw meat is also difficult to digest and can cause various digestion problems. Make sure chicken, eggs, fish, mutton or any other meat you have is thoroughly cooked and is bought from a hygienic place. Avoid trying new types of meat if you haven't tried it before.

- Raw, unpasteurized milk and milk products: Choose milk and milk products carefully. Avoid raw milk or unpasteurized milk to cut down on food borne illnesses.

- Flatulence producing foods: Avoid foods which cause flatulence (gases). Foods commonly known to produce gas are brinjals, chana dal, besan, potatoes, eggs, puffed rice, whole legumes, etc. Cooking these foods properly can reduce the gas producing effect. Also, make sure you consume these foods in the first half of the day when your activity levels are high.

- Oily and acidic foods: (in pregnancy you are more prone to acid reflux) - Avoid deep fried foods (especially in the second half of the day), recipes with too much spices, oily curry, recipes with a lot of groundnut or coconut, or any other foods which you know gives you acidity!

- Processed foods: Go low on processed foods or foods containing preservatives. Avoid bakery products, recipes with ajinomoto, or any potentially harmful food colours.

- Alcohol: Avoid all alcoholic beverages during pregnancy, as its ill effects are well known.

- Caffeine: Reduce caffeine intake in any form (coffee or any other beverage/ dessert). Go low on aerated drinks also.

Choose your foods wisely during pregnancy, as these won't just affect you, but your baby too!
