When the thyroid gland is unable to produce sufficient thyroid hormone in the body it leads to hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland). The hormones produced by the thyroid gland help to regulate the metabolism. The method by which the body converts whatever you eat and drink to energy is metabolism. When the thyroid hormones are not adequate in the body, the body's functions slow down and in turn lower metabolism leads to weight gain. Some other aspects which can cause weight gain are lowered physical activity due to tiredness and fatigue, and imbalance between calorie intake and output.

Here are some tips which can help you lose or manage your weight -

• Be regular with your exercise - Exercise and healthy diets go hand-in-hand which helps you to lose the excess weight. Take out time from your daily schedule and be consistent with your exercise. Exercise for 45 to 60 minutes at least 5 days a week. Use the stairs instead of the elevator or escalators. Walk to the nearby areas rather than using the car or bike.

• Have balanced meals - The meals have to be balanced and nutritionally adequate as all the nutrients are essential for a healthy living. A meal which comprises of whole grains like oats, brown rice, whole wheat flour, bajra, jowar; vegetables and fruits, protein sources like pulses and legumes, lean chicken, fish and eggs, some milk and milk products like curds and buttermilk is a balanced meal.

• Have your medications on time - Make sure you take your medicines regularly on time and keep a check on your thyroid levels. The thyroid medicines have to be taken early morning on an empty stomach. Do not skip your medicines.

• Go for complex carbs - Complex carbs keeps you full for a longer time and avoids you from over eating. They are rich in fiber which helps in weight loss. Complex carbs are found in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, brown rice, lentils, and legumes.

• Small and frequent meals - Having small and frequent meals keeps your metabolism going, avoids hunger pangs, and keeps the blood sugar levels in check.

• Include iodine & selenium sources - Iodine helps in the production of thyroid hormone and thus helps in regulating the thyroid function. As the body does not produce iodine, you have to include iodine rich food sources in the diet. You can find iodine in dairy products, sea foods, eggs. Have iodized table salt instead of regular salt. Selenium helps in the synthesis and metabolism of the thyroid hormone. Some of the food sources of selenium are sea foods, Brazil nuts, brown rice, egg, oats, and baked beans.

• Manage stress well - Being stressed makes you choose unhealthy and junk food which leads to overeating and finally it leads to weight gain. Avoid stress & be positive!

Losing weight with hypothyroidism can be tough but it is not impossible! Implement these changes in your life and stay healthy and happy!
