Coenzyme Q10 has been studied for its benefits relating to heart health and its antioxidant values. CoQ10 is said to be beneficial for various heart-related conditions. It prevents heart failure and blood clot formation. Other names for CoQ10 include- Q10, vitamin Q10, ubiquinone, or ubidecarenone. The body produces CoQ10; the cells use this for providing energy necessary for cell growth and maintenance. Being an antioxidant, it also protects against free radical damage, helping the body maintain healthy cells and DNA. Coenzymes assist in enzyme activity, helping enzymes work to ensure proper digestion of food. This is also beneficial in quick recovery post an exercise session. CoQ10 is also protective to the heart and skeletal muscles.

Uses of CoQ10

Heart failure
CoQ10 may be helpful in treating heart related conditions (improving cholesterol) and blood pressure. This is when it is combined with mainstream medication and care. This enzyme is usually combined with statins for heart health.  Those suffering with heart failure have low levels of the enzyme in their blood. Heart failure causes an accumulation of blood in one’s lungs and legs; it also causes difficulty in breathing. Supplements of CoQ10 have been helpful in reducing this swelling and are shown to increase exercise capacity, therefore having a positive impact on breathing. Prior to heart surgery, CoQ10 can help by reducing free radical damage and lower the occurrence of an irregular heart-beat. However, some studies have shown no such positive benefits. It is always important to consult a specialist before taking supplements. Supplements should always be used with an established treatment protocol. Never should they be used to replace the treatment.

Cancer
In the treatment of cancer, CoQ10 is suggested to be a useful secondary treatment. Again, those suffering from cancer had lower levels of CoQ10 in their blood. Its role in cancer was due to its ability to boost immunity. The National Cancer Institute says that the enzyme helps stimulate the immune system. This protects the heart from antitumor drugs like Doxorubicin, Adriamycin and Athracycline medications which are used in chemotherapy. The NCI also states that –‘No report of a randomized clinical trial of coenzyme Q10 as a treatment for cancer has been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.’

Elevated cholesterol
Statins are commonly used to treat high cholesterol. CoQ10 helps reduce the side effects of these drugs, which actually lower CoQ10 in the body. These statins are known to cause muscle pains, which the enzyme helps alleviate. Again, the supplemental form of CoQ10 can be used along with statins and not as a replacement.

Diabetes
Supplements of CoQ10 have been shown to improve blood sugar levels. They also help manage high blood pressure in those suffering from diabetes. The supplement was also shown to help with better blood sugar control. A study published in 2002 in Diabetologica stated that the enzyme helped improve arterial circulation in patients with Type 2 diabetes. (1)

Gum disease

Gum disease results in swelling, bleeding, pain, and redness of the gums. Periodontitis is a condition that causes deterioration of the gum and bone around the teeth. This affects about 60% of young adults and 90% of individuals above 65. Even with good oral hygiene practises one can still be affected with gingival (gum) irritations and chronic infections. This could require surgery or result in tooth loss. The body’s ability to heal and repair periodontal tissue depends in part on an adequate supply of CoQ10. Those with gum disease tend to have low levels of CoQ10 in their gums, suggesting that periodontal disease is frequently associated with CoQ10 deficiency. (2)

On-going research
Clinical trials suggest that CoQ10 may:
•    Boost immunity in those with HIV or AIDS
•    Improve drug induced muscle weakness and enhance sports performance (quicker recovery)
•    Reproductive health: Increase sperm motility, improving male fertility
•    For the treatment for Parkinson and Alzheimer’s  disease
•    Improve exercise ability in people with angina
•    Help prevent migraines
These studies will help establish if CoQ10 is safe and effective for these health problems and needs. (3)

Dietary Sources
Primary dietary sources of CoQ10 include fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and tuna, organ meats (liver, heart) and whole grains. Most people get enough CoQ10 through a balanced diet, but supplements may help people with particular health conditions. (4)

Caution:
Before taking supplements, it is important to consult your Physician. CoQ10 supplements should not replace a healthy balanced diet or mainstream medical care. Sometimes dietary supplements can interact with medications. Look for reputed brands of supplements that are regulated by the FDA. Sometimes a supplement may contain ingredients not listed on the label.

Pregnant and nursing mothers need to take supplements only when needed and on recommendation of a doctor. Do not give a child a dietary supplement without consulting a Paediatrician.
