The occurrence of depression is like an unvarying, toxic gloom. Undoubtedly tough.

When we face challenging situations, we might wonder whether we will ever be able to get out of them. There will be times when we do not feel like eating or sleeping. Some mornings we might not even feel like getting up, or we may feel like just letting go and being done with life. But if we hold on and fight against it, we can get over it and lead a normal life. Yes, we can lead a normal life even if we are hit with depression. We will require the right guidance and support to reach there.

Recovering from depression isn't easy or straightforward. One of the hardest things is that we might just not know what to expect. It's not like healing from a fracture. If you break your leg, the doctor could give you facts about your recovery. You might even be informed about how many weeks you would need to be in plaster rendering the part immobile, and the time you would need to recover completely.

Unfortunately, depression isn't like that. Each person's recovery is different. Some recover in a few weeks or months. But for others, depression can be a long-term concern. Medication and therapy will help you get back on track when you are facing depression.

As depression leaves, another emotion might be felt. It might be of pure delight and happiness. Relief that the depression did not endure forever. Happiness that depression is slowly but certainly leaving. Happiness that we did not give up on our lives in the darkest of days. Happiness that life was merciful in giving the healing strength. The departure of depression is like a new dawn breaking. The fog clears. One can live again. If you feel depressed, let us fight it together.

You are not alone, and you need not take on this battle without help.

The Journey from Depression to Recovery & Normalcy

Talk to someone about it.

Recognize that you may require the help of a professional counsellor and a medical practitioner, most usually a psychiatrist.

Learn about your symptoms; the early warning signs of the depression you are experiencing.

Work with a counsellor to understand the importance and effects of medication.

Work with your doctor in understanding side effects, if any, of your medication and learn ways that could counter these. Don't stop the medication because of the side effects.

Work with a counsellor to learn effective ways of dealing with stressors that are contributing to depression.

In counselling, identify what maladaptive thinking patterns that could be resulting in worsening the low times.

Learn more appropriate ways of thinking. Talk to your doctor or counsellor about the benefits of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Act yourself into feeling better. This means do your structured routine whether you ‘feel' like it. Sometimes just completing it will make you feel better.

An early diagnosis of depression, along with compliance with prescribed treatment, and supportive counselling and therapy will help you not just fight the depression but move towards leading a ‘normal‘ life.
