SELF HELP RESOURCE - Relationships / Family & Friends

Coming out to your friends and/or family is a big decision as it means you have accepted your orientation and are now ready to share this with those closest to you. Keeping in mind that this must be a sensitive decision, here are some points that might help you plan for the discussion.

1. Be sure of yourself
It is good to ensure that you have taken the time to identify with your orientation and that you are comfortable with it.

2. Have support
Build a good support system by talking to people of the same orientation, close ones who already know, your partner if you have one, a counsellor, etc, might help you both before and after the discussion as it is important that you also feel encouraged through this process.

3. Be in a good place in your life
As the discussion may bring about certain changes in your life and relationships it will be helpful if you are settled in other aspects of your life such as finances, career, etc. to rely on during this period of adjustment (if any).

4. Choose the right time and who you have to tell
Pick the right time when you know people will be open to a discussion. It is also important for you to decide who you are comfortable sharing this information with, as you may not be ready to share it with all of your loved ones.

5. Be realistic about reactions you may get
Different people respond to the news differently. Keeping in mind that responses may vary from positive, negative to neutral or indifferent. Remember to try to stay calm even if no one else is.

6. Have prepared answers
It may help your loved ones understand you better if you are able to reassure them and respond to any questions they might have.

7. Give them time and space
As mentioned earlier, the news may cause certain changes in your relationships. Give them and yourself time and space to process this but ensure that their reactions do not influence how you feel about your orientation.

Now that you have read through these suggestions it will help if you practice what you want to say a few times with someone and prepare yourself for the discussion. im impressed with the article. it is so very important to have empowering beliefs as it does help us in motivating ourselves and serves as a fuel when we slow down and not progress during set backs.
