Most of us are familiar with acne, as we deal with it, at least once in a lifetime. Be it on face, back or chest, some of them causes irritation and pain, while few of them don’t. It occurs when the hair follicles get clogged with excess sebum and dead skin cells.  

Acne can worsen if there is a growth of bacteria inside the hair follicles. While many of us know how to get rid of acne with a lot of home remedies, here are few foods that you need to avoid to keep acne at bay.  

Here's a list of food items that should be avoided to prevent acne 

  • High glycemic foods – Foods made with refined carbohydrates and sugar like white breads, cakes, sodas, sugar laden beverages like energy drinks or juices are high glycemic foods. These foods tend to increase the acne development as they increase androgen, a hormone linked with acne. It also boosts more sebum production which is one of the reasons for acne development.  

  • Processed foods – Burgers, pastas, pizzas, potato chips, cookies are all processed foods and do not contain any fibre. These foods cause blood sugar spikes and can affect different hormonal functions in the body, paving way for an acne outburst. Many researches from all over the world have also concluded that processed foods increase acne outburst  

  • Dairy products – Several studies throughout the world have commonly found a link between milk and acne. It is known that milk increases insulin levels in the body. Insulin is linked to worsen acne issues. Milk also contains certain hormones and amino acids which might be linked to acne development.  

  • Milk chocolates – Chocolates are made from cocoa, sugar and other ingredients and additives. Milk chocolates additionally contain milk along with high sugar content. This makes it an ideal combination for acne outburst. As a reason, it is better to avoid them when you have acne. 

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is always a positive approach towards preventing acne. Avoid all the unhealthy foods and try to include whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables.  

Develop a routine inclusive of exercise. Try to manage your stress levels by indulging in a hobby or an activity which refreshes your mind. Do some meditation and yoga as well. Overall, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the key for a healthy body.
